When deciding what type of treadmill to purchase, there are a few key factors to keep in mind before making a decision.

1. How big is the treadmill?

a. Commercial treadmills are built much differently than residential treadmills and are much bigger in size comparison. Before purchasing a treadmill, measure the space you have available and then check the dimensions of the unit(s) you are interested in.
b. The bigger sizes of the commercial treadmills provided larger surface areas for running which provides more stability during your workout and can also accommodate a higher maximum user weight.
c. The smaller sized residential treadmills can often be folded down and easily stored, but since they have space-saving abilities, they may not be as stable especially for larger users.

2. Do you have the necessary power requirements for a commercial treadmill?

a. Commercial and residential treadmills run off two different motor types, and therefore have different power requirements.
b. Commercial treadmills run off an AC Motor, or alternating current motor. These motors are more powerful than the alternative DC Motor (direct current motor) but have higher power requirements.
c. If you are planning on owning a commercial treadmill with an AC motor, you will need to make sure you have a dedicated powerline specifically for the treadmill and check the specific power usages for the model you are interested in. Not all powerlines will be equipped to handle the power surge of a commercial treadmill.
d. Since AC motors are more powerful, they will use more energy so expect a spike in your electricity bill depending on how often you plan to use your machine.
e. The DC motors in a residential treadmill run mostly by generating energy from batteries and will provide a steady operational speed. DC motors do require less power and won’t need their own power-line; but the motor itself will not last as long as an AC motor.

3. Price

a. Commercial treadmills are going to be significantly higher in price than a residential treadmill. Fortunately though, there are many places you can purchase pre-owned commercial fitness equipment.
b. When purchasing pre-owned equipment keep in mind that these are used treadmills. In many cases there can be slight rusting on the machine. This can be due to many factors such as humidity or sweat. Sometimes the paint can be peeling and upholstery may not look fresh. However, because of these cosmetic issues, you can find a great deal on a commercial strength treadmill that may not look the best but will last you for years to come.
